Günstige Erfrischungen für heiße Tage | Refreshments On Hot Days On A Budget

4. Bringe (provisorische) Rollos an

Refreshments on hot days on a budget

Sun and warmth often make us excited but keep a cool head and don’t spend a fortune on impulse refreshment buys. Be smart and frugal and get refreshments all at once with my five tips.

1. Take drinks with you

Oh, come on. Buying water on the way costs just like a euro or something. Well, yes, a euro for water? Are you serious? I can have the same amount for less than one cent if I fill up a travel cup with tap water ( Germany has excellent drinking water out of the tap). Not fancy enough? Ok, then take the sparkling water you made yourself or bought in a bottle at the discounter. You can put all of that in the fridge before leaving and have nice fresh water with you for literally cents instead of euros. It might save you only a bit every day but it will add up very fast.

2. Get your ice cream in a super market (or make it yourself)

Hot days and ice cream go like the countryside and the smell of cow dung. Um, yeah, I just mean you cannot seperate those two. It is an impossible undertaking. You can, however, change the price tag for ice cream. Imaging you’re out in the sun, walking around and, of course, the desire for ice cream gets stronger and stronger. Instead of running into the next kiosk and spend 2-3 Euros for your desired ice cream just check out the next discounter or maybe even drugstore and get the same for 1,20 Euros. Hey, when there is a kiosk, there most likely is a cheaper store nearby.

Alternatively, make your ice cream yourself. I like to freeze fruit (most favorite: sliced over ripe bananas) and blend them with (almond) milk. That’s it. No extra sugar or anything needed. Super yummy!

3. Cool your feet down

You probably know that phenomenon from winter. When your feet are cold your whole body feels cold. Use that in summe, toor. If you need to refresh and you cannot or do not want to go swimming take a nice cool foot bath. It’ll cool down your body from below. If you have some work to do on a desk it might not only provide refreshment but also make work more pleasent. I love doing this in summer.

4. Make shift blinds

Sun shining right into a room can heat it up a lot very fast and opening the window will not help. Thus, you have to prevent sun from coming in in the first place. In Germany, it is not very common the have no blinds but you might just be different from other Germans or were socialized in a different country and wonder what people with blinds have to hide. Or maybe you just moved into your appartment, your blinds broke or whatever. My point is, you do not have anything protecting your room against the sun and that needs to change. The trick is you take a blanket or other item that is basically one big cloth, tilt the window, put a part of the cloth into the slit and close the window tucking the cloth. Boom. Instant blinds.

Extra tip: You can do the same in a car.

5. Pimp your fan

In Germany, ususally homes (or even public buildings) have no air conditioning. To get somewhat of a cheaper version of an ac you can pimp your fan. With a fan you often end up just circling hot air around which is better than nothing but there is a way to get more out of your fan. You need, obviously, a fan, a small towel or other cloth, (cool) water and something to fix the cloth to the fan (like clothes pins). You get the cloth moist (there, I said it) and NOT dripping! You fix it onto the fan (front) and must make sure it cannot under any circumstances get tangled in the fan. Then you turn the fan on and switch out the cloth with a new one as needed. Moist cloth gets cool when drying out (you might know this from clothes that feel cool to the touch even if you hang them inside) and this is how it cools your room. You’re welcome.

These five tips should help you get through unbearingly hot summer days without spending a fortune for fancy stuff. Try them all and let me know which of these work best for you.
